The majority of PS3 consoles are running firmware versions newer than 3.55, which doesn't have the same encryption problem. In this version Sony messed up the encryption system which allowed the PS3 hacking community to create custom firmware updates that could be installed, also called custom firmware or CFW.

Sony released firmware version 3.55 for the PS3 in late 2010. What is custom firmware, and what it's used forīefore I begin I'd like to provide some background information.

You should now have 4.89 CFW installed on your PS3.Now that the USB has 4.89 CFW, you need to plug it back into the console, and Update via Storage Media again. Drag the UPDATE folder into the PS3 folder, and accept overwrites.To do this, power off your console and remove the USB stick, and plug it into your computer. You should now be able to install custom firmware on your device. This should take around 10 minutes to complete.

Once the console has loaded, head to Settings – > System Update -> Update via Storage Media -> Proceed

Plug the USB into the PS3 console (off), and then turn it on.

This folder contains the PS3 downgrade for 4.89 OFW to 3.55 OFW.

Place the PS3 folder from the extracted folder on to the USB drives root directory.
